The Track Listing
Here is a track listing for every selection on the February CD:
- track 1: A7 - D9 straight-eighths. Unlike the January CD exercises, this has some sustain when the chord is tied over the bar. The quarter note = 126.
- track 2: A7 - D9 straight-eighths with all outstrokes. The quarter note = 108 this time, and this version paves the way for the sixteenth-note groove of the next track.
- track 3: A7 - D9 doubling up the outstroke eighths of track 2 to make a sixteenth-note funk groove. There are many, many cool sixteenth-note patterns, and this is only one.
- track 4: |D / G / |Am / G / :|| -- this is a straight-eighths "Louie Louie" - type progression.
- track 5: Same dulcimer track as the previous, only with a kind of mesmerizing electric guitar riff in the lower register.
- track 6: Here we have a swing-eighths or "rasta" version of the Louie chords. This one is perfect for all sorts of 12/8 polyrhythmic overlays, whether on the soloing or on the contruction of more countermelodies (like the previous guitar riff). mp3 (2.5 MB - 2:49)
- track 7: Hush Little Baby: |D / / / |A7 / / / | / / / / |D / / / :|| - This is in a swing-eighths or rasta groove, and it is absolutely a blast to solo over. Here is a slightly more detailed look at the unusual harmonic suspensions that the basic melody suggests:
|D / / / |D/A A7 / / | / / / / |G6 D / / :||
- track 8: I call this "Dominant Cabbage" because there is a dominant 7th chord on I, IV, and V:
|A7 / / / |D7 / / / |A7 / / / |E7 / / / | |A7 / / / |D7 / / / |A7 / E7 / |A7 / / / :||
mp3 (1.8 MB - 2:00) - track 9: Touchstone 2004: this is my update to the distinctly tie-dye improv I did around 1989 on a stretched-out version of the chords to the English Country Dance tune. The original version had multiple tracks of rhythm dulcimers and a guitar lead. This track is only one dulcimer backup part.
- track 10: Here is a slow 12/8 progression popular in the 1950s:
|D / / / | / / / / |Bm / / / | / / / / | |Em / / / | / / / / |A7 / G / |F#m / Em / :||
- track 11: This is a two-part sketch on Sloop John B. There is a rhythm dulcimer part on one side and a sort of descant/harmony part dulcimer on the other side. mp3 (2 MB - 2:18)
- track 12: I call this "Uncle Jerry's Groove" -- it is one of my favorite ways of dressing up a basic I7 - IV7 progression: by making a little I - bVII - VIm - Vm subcycle off of each chord:
|A7 / G / | F#m / Em / |D7 / C / |Bm / Am / :||
This is a jazz guitar duet, but it is easy to get the same structure happening on the dulcimer. mp3 (3.7 MB - 4:06) - track 13: Finally, we have an embellished version of the chords for the popular "Temperance Reel" -- slowed way down and put into a lazy 12/8 groove:
In G, as on CD: |G / / / | / / / / |Em / / / |Am / D7 / | |G / / / | / / / / |Em / / / |Am D7 G / :|| |Em / / / | / / / / |D / / / |Bm / / / | |C / / / |Am / / / | / / / / |Am D7 G / :||
mp3 (2.9 MB - 3:15)In D: |D / / / | / / / / |Bm / / / |Em / A7 / | |D / / / | / / / / |Bm / / / |Em A7 D / :|| |Bm / / / | / / / / |A / / / |F#m / / / | |G / / / |Em / / / | / / / / |Em A7 D / :||
