Jerry Rockwell's Calendar for 2007My schedule for 2007 will be updated periodically as new classes, workshops, concerts, or festival appearances are confirmed. For those of you who have written asking about individual workshops: yes, I can develop a master class tailored to your skill level. And you might want to combine a day (or up to a week) of intensive study with a visit to our rural Appalachian foothills. We have always enjoyed arranging entertaining and productive visits for our out-of-town and out-of-state guests (you will need to call a month or two in advance). If you're driving through Southeastern Ohio on the Appalachian Highway, call to see if we're in before stopping by. We are definitely NOT a typical retail shop. Central Ohio Folk Festival - May 4-6Set your calendars for the 11th Annual Central Ohio Folk Festival coming up on May 4 - 6, with Sally Rogers, Guy Davis (a great acoustic blues man), and a host of fine workshop leaders -- including some great mountain dulcimer workshops. I'll be doing a basic guitar workshop and a workshop on music theory for folk musicians. On Sunday, I'll also be performing in a spotlight concert at 1PM. Here is the web site for the festival if you want to get more details: http://www.cfms-inc.org/central_ohio_folk_festival.htm Hockhocking Festival - May 18-20This will be a really AMAZING year for the Hockhocking Festival (formerly known as The Hockhocking Folk Festival), and if I wasn't already signed up to do some ongoing dulcimer building demos as well as a dulcimer playing workshop (Saturday at 1PM), I'd be sure to buy a weekend pass. If you go to the web site for the festival, you will see the incredible diversity of the musical acts this year, from Michael Hurley, Todd Snider, Guy Clark, Devon Sproule, Espers, Kendra Ward and Bob Bence, to the everybodyfields, and many more! http://www.hocking.edu/hockhocking/ The 9th Annual Landowner's Conference - June 2-3
Location: Camp Oty' Okwa in the Hocking Hills Folk Festival in Siglufjord, Northern Iceland - July 4-8I'll be performing, lecturing, and teaching dulcimer at the Folk Festival in Siglufjord, Northern Iceland this July. The festival runs from July 4th through July 8th, and it is held at the folk center that was established recently in this North - Central town previously known for its herring production. This year, the festival is putting a bit of an emphasis on the fretted zither family of instruments, with the mountain dulcimer, the Icelandic langspil, and the Norwegian Langeleik all represented. I'm also looking forward to developing a couple of dulcimer - langspil duets with Orn Magnusson, who is an expert langspil player and researcher. This looks to be a really amazing festival all around, with Icelandic folk music having a strong presence, and a variety of eclectic groups from around the world adding classical, jazz, and all sorts of influences to the mix. They don't seem to have it translated into English yet (the button for English takes you to a English page describing the Folk Center at Siglufjordur), but the 2007 festival web site is now up: Harmony Harvest Festival - September 14 - 16This is a fabulous dulcimer gathering, and I've enjoyed myself thoroughly every time I've participated. This year I'll be doing a featured concert on Saturday night as well as 2 dulcimer workshops. The festival is held at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds in Lancaster, Ohio. http://www.strothers.com/harmony_harvest.htm Dulcimer Building Demo at Cleveland Metro Parks - Sunday, September 23This is the second year in a row I'll be doing some dulcimer building in the instrument makers' tent at the Cedar Valley Settlers Celebration and Music Festival, a wonderful event put on by the Cleveland Metro Parks and WKSU: Concert at Scott's Folkatorium - 2567 South Arlington Road, Akron - Friday, September 28This should be an amazing gig at one of Northeast Ohio's most innovative venues. They've got me billed as "Jerry the electric dulcimer player" which is just fine by me! You will get your fair share of the amplified dulcimer if you can make it, and I'll also be pulling out some of the more popular tunes and songs from my concert in the herring factory museum in Siglufjord, Iceland earlier this summer. http://www.scottsfolkatorium.com/ Concert with Don Charles and Deb Gessner at The Donkey, Athens, Ohio - Friday, October 20I'm really looking forward to this! I'll be sharing an evening with some great musicians and friends, Don Charles and Deb Gessner (aka d-squared), at Athens' great listening room called The Donkey Coffee and Expresso. Don and Deb's music is refreshingly unique and has a kind of brutal honesty about it -- sometimes I like to think of some of their songs as existential. The songs have many, many layers of meaning, and Don's guitar work is truly masterful. Deb is primarily a harpist and she soes some things with her harp that you just have to come and see - words do not suffice. Southeast Ohio Dulcimer Festival - November 9-11This year we'll be trying something completely different. We're going in the direction of increasing intensity, with some long workshops led by only three instructors:
We'll have stuff for beginners, intermediate as well as advanced players, and some workshops with at least two instructors. Much more info will be posted on the dedicated festival page coming soon. We'll still be at the Federal Valley Resource Center in Stewart, Ohio, as in recent years.
