1. With
the dulcimer on your lap, its tuning head pointed to
your left, and hands off strings, strum across all three strings
(melody, middle and bass).
2. Play a scale on the melody string (it's the one closest to you). The scale starts when you pick the open melody string (no hands) then hold down the string with your pointer finger just to the left of the first fret, strum, then move on up and locate the notes at each fret. Listen to the notes as they get higher in pitch and the frets get closer together along the fretboard.
